Good photographers always plan their shots, or at least try to plan them and that's what I did for this shot. I searched around on Google Earth for what might be some cool places to capture a sunrise from the Island of Porquerolles, just 20 minutes off the coast of Hyères, France via ferry. As there are no cars permitted on the island, I happily rented a mountain bike and started location scouting which is infinitely better that driving a car to do so. I found this little calanque - or cove - and calculated at what time the sun would rise, when the astronomical/nautical/civil twilights would be and also the angle of incidence at that time. I was ready.
But, as often happens in photography and life, there are circumstances beyond one's control and I encountered one of those this particular morning. They sky was cloudy and I was not going to get a postcard sunrise so I made the best of what I had with a 60 second time exposure. And that's what you see above. Soon after all of this I rode 20 minutes back to the hotel for a few cafes au lait and a beautiful breakfast.
I do have some nice sunrise images from other trips so if you want to have a look at any of these you can do so on his website - maxdobens.com
